I am so excited to finally present a blog about the new Honeywell 6280i Touch Center! We’ve known this product was coming for the last few months but few details were escaping from Honeywell’s team of expert craftsmen who have been beta testing and tweaking the new touch center. This week I received the new 4th quarter catalog from Honeywell and I was absolutely thrilled to see information about the new 6280i Tuxedo Touch. This keypad is still not yet for sale, but we know it’s coming and my friends at Honeywell say it should be available for purchase by the end of this year.
The world of Z-Wave technology is taking over – what used to cost tens of thousands of dollars for home automation has now become reasonably affordable to the average household. Still don’t know about Z-Wave? I wrote a blog about the Z-Wave products a while back and it’s still available to read in our security blog section of the website www.globalalarms.net. Z-Wave is a technology available in many different products. There are light switches, electrical receptacles, thermostats, lock systems and even blinds that have Z- Wave chips inside of them. The Z-Wave chip works like a wireless receiver communicating with other Z-Wave devices inside your home like an intricate symphony of home automation. The Z-Wave components all report back to a router connected to your existing internet connection to allow you to control all of these Z-Wave products from anywhere internet access is available – including on your smart phone, IPad or laptop computer.
Z-Wave is great for our security system clients in the Orlando area because of the high number of vacation or second home properties we have. Homeowners living full time out of state can now unlock the door and disarm the security system in their vacation homes from anywhere! There’s no longer a need to provide separate keys to visitors, housekeepers or maintenance men. Simply view your ip cameras at the front door to make sure the person is authorized to be at your home, unlock the front door dead bolt and disarm the security system to allow them to gain entry to the home. When the person leaves, lock the door and arm the security system behind them. You could do this from anywhere in the world!
Z- Wave controllers also allow us full time residents to control our lighting and thermostats from anywhere. All of us Florida residents understand how costly the utility bills can be when we attempt to keep the house cool at just the right times during the summer and warm in the winter. We want to leave the lights on when we step out for the evening so the path is lighted up to the front door. We want to ensure that our children have turned the lights off when they leave for school in the morning etc. The Z-Wave bridge that was released earlier in the year by Honeywell was the beginning of the solution. When a Z-Wave bridge device is added to the existing home security system, lighting and thermostats can be set to respond to the burglar alarm keypad. When the alarm system is armed (for example) the thermostat temperature can be raised to an energy saving 78 degrees and the lights can be turned off. When the security system is disarmed the thermostat resets to a cool 74 degrees and the living room lamp turns on. Controlling Z-Wave devices remotely when away from the home still must be done through a separate application when using the Z-Wave bridge.
